    Golden Oldies Showcase!

And so we arrive at the start of May, and Golden Oldies month officially draws to a close. This April challenge was to paint something that fit the theme of a “Golden Oldie” – this could be a really old miniature, something thats been in your backlog for many years, a model of an old character, however you wanted to interpret it! Let’s take a look at what you wonderful hobbyists got up to for this project!

Cee, aka the Dork Phoenix, painted up this Krell model. The bright red harks back to a nostalgic era for many of us!

From Kemp, comes his first ever “proper” paint job as he calls it, a classic beakie Blood Angels space marine. Lovely work!

From Heavy Metal Wars comes a Rogue Trader Astropath and a Talisman 2nd edition Astropath standing in an old ruined chapel, a scenery piece that was a card insert from White Dwarf 212! Not only that, but check out that lovely unit of classic Grey Knights! And certainly not least, a classic beakie space marine from the Rogue Trader era in custom chapter colours of the Star Breakers!

From PSippit we have this classic Adeptus Titanicus titan, which afaik dates back to the late 80s! The modern paint job really hides its age well, it could stand proudly amongst a modern AT collection!

ThePoshGoblin is a hobbyist after my own heart with this, the original classic Orion model from back in the day! Got to love a bit of the retro Wood Elves!

It’s heresy time now, with this old school Chaos Sorcerer from BigGeordieGeek! Again I love the bright reds and greens here that really bring out that classic 90s vibe.

theelusiveshaun shared this Ork warbike, complete with evil sun iconography on the banner pole and front of the bike! Really lovely work!

Something from myself now, a unit of metal 90s Wood Elf archers with full command. I’ve always adored these archers and will probably aim to add more at some point to my growing Wood Elf army! I also added Ariel and a unit of classic metal Dryads.

You’ve seen one Krell, now it’s time for an even older Krell courtesy of Mommy Negan. Green base, red armour, banner pole, what’s not to adore? Mommy also shared a few other characters – a Wood Elf, an Empire halberdier and a Dwarf!

From Usagi/SHeroQueer comes this 1995 Hive Tyrant. Looks fabulous to me, would slip right into a modern army seamlessly! That’s not all though, she also shared this lovely HeroQuest warrior model!

Thokamous shared this Sgt. Rock for us, and although it did make it into last month’s community showcase he’s from an old comic and thus qualifies to get another showing! 🙂

From Art comes a trio of retro wonderfulness! The 1990 Maurauder Giant, a metal Imperial War Wagon and Malus Darkblade upon Cold One! A really varied and nostalgic mix of miniatures!

Aaaaand that brings us to the end of the Golden Oldies month. I think you’ll agree that we’ve seen a great selection of classic models here! If you’d like to join us in the #PaintSlam21 community and enter future events, please checkout the PaintSlam21 page for all the info!

  • How I photograph and finish my mini photos (without a lightbox or fancy camera!)

How I photograph and finish my mini photos (without a lightbox or fancy camera!)

A few people have asked me how I photograph my miniatures for display. Since the end of last year I have tried to present my finished models in a betterlight against a white background, so here I will try to explain in simple terms how I do it.

    What I use:
    – My Phone’s Camera (Google Pixel 4a)
    – LED light (YOUKOYI LED Desk Lamp)
    – Adobe Photoshop (I’m sure you can use GIMP or PaintShopPro as alternatives)
    – The back of an A4 poster
    – Blu-tac

    Preparing the photography area:

I begin by taking my poster and using a bit of blu-tac to attach it to the shelf on my (admittedly cramped and messy) hobby/work desk. I attach it with a subtle curve to avoid a background crease or any harsh shadows. The LED lamp I use is on an adjustable arm so I bring the lamp down close to the models and set it to a low-mid setting on the dimmer. The light diffuses nicely as long as you don’t set it too bright.

Next I place my models near the centre of the paper, trying to keep them flat to the desk surface (you might need to adjust the curve of the paper if its too shallow). Next I use my phone camera to snap a few shots of the models from different angles, ensuring that the models are not overlapping the edge of the paper in my shot.

Once I have the photo I save it to my dropbox, put the models and paper aside and then take the image into Photoshop.

    Editing

With the image open in photoshop, we need to take the following steps:

    • Adjust the light levels
    • Crop the image
    • Erase any remaining shadows

I begin by using the crop tool, then whiting out the areas surrounding the miniatures. I do this by simply selecting the remaining areas of background and filling them in with pure white.

Next, I add a Levels Adjustment layer (Adjustments -> Levels). I click the “White” eyedropper and then click on the background at the darkest shadow (not counting the very dark ones cast by the model at the left of the image).

It can help to hold the ALT key (on PC) whilst looking for the darkest shadow, and click in an area that shows up black as you hold this button down. That way you’ll knock the background to a pure white and brighten the whole image without negatively affecting the darkest areas.

Finally, I just go in manually with the brush tool to paint over any remaining shadows (such as those visible on the left there), then I copy and paste the nicely clean image into my PaintSlam21 template image.

And that’s my final image. It’s not totally perfect – I could have taken a bit more care with the focus since the models closest to the camera are a little blurred. But for the purposes of posting my images on social media it certainly does the trick!

I hope this little guide has helped some of you out. I’m not the most technically minded photographer, all the stuff about aperture and such goes right over my head so I do tend to rely on my phone’s auto settings in that respect.

    MARCH #PAINTSLAM21 COMMUNITY SHOWCASE!

Well, well, well! Here we are at the start April, one quarter of the way through 2021 already! Where does the time go? It’s been another hectic month for hobbyists around the world, not least of all those in our very lovely PaintSlam Discord server! So, let’s jump right into things!

Friend of mine BigGeordieGeek has been very hard at work this month! Check out this wonderful and varied display of painted miniatures! There’s a rather spiffing T’au Empire Riptide battlesuit, a Necron lord guy and Roboute Guilliman himself! Not the only Guilliman we’ll be seeing this month, I think…

Next up, the lovely Bradalads has painted this Sigvald the Magnificent who looks, well, magnificent! The blue trim really pops against the gold armour, and is sure to turn all heads in his sublime direction!

From ChrisRiti we have this wonderful sorcerer chap! I like the warm colour pallette here!

From Commissar Lewdfang we have a shot of his full Custodes army so far. The blue is really striking and very different to the usual custodes look!

Ah, he’s back! This Guilliman of the 41st Millenium was painted by Drizzt23, and I really like the lava surrounding the base which frames the miniature to give it a sense of atmosphere. The flame sword looks fab too!

A couple of gorgeous models from GardenGoth here, in particular I adore the lighting effect cast from the burning sword, and the weathering on the green cloth of the ancient!

Lots of cool stuff from HeavyMetalWars! Including a great Hellebron conversion, some Cold One Knights and a delightfully old school looking Dark Angels force.

Some comic book action here from JB including a lovely angry treeman chap!

From the ever reliable Mommy Negan we have a Saruman and some more fantastic Ultramarines! Did anyone else reading participate in MarchForMacragge? Let us know in the comments below!

Mutant Zombie shared these brutal looking Khorne warriors! They look like they’re fighting in the arid plains and dead soil of Aqshy!

Pandemonium Miniatures shared this great mix of different models, including some Conquest and Ghosts of Gaia models from Bad Squiddo Games!

PSippit shared this little lot! There’s a Primaris tank variant, a Stormcast Stardrake and a Runtherd and unruly grots for him to boss around! The saliva in the Stardrake’s mouth looks so real!

SHeroQueer has been hard at work this month! Check out the old school Chaos Warriors, and the Skeletor homage! Elsewhere there’s also Bugman and a Slaanesh hero!

During march, Theelusiveshaun painted all of this! That’s an impressive tally of models!

Thokamous submitted this soldier chap! I don’t know who it is, but good work!

Tim Kelly shared his first 2 Stormcast Eternals! The dull metal armour and deep magenta colours look so cool!

From Wren comes this Deathwing terminator with gorgeous blue power sword! How nice is this!

And let’s end as strongly as we’ve been going with these gorgeous yellow Eldar from Yeast! The colours look fabulous!

And that’s it for another month of PaintSlam community showcase!
