Apologies, once again, for the very late community showcase post this month, showing off the very coolest hobby from the month of September! I’ve been absolutely wallopped by my brain this month resulting in extremely low productivity (and self-worth, I guess, but hey ho) so I have to give a huge thanks to Momma Negan for helping me collate the images for this article. I’d struggle to do this without their amazing help this month. So let’s get in and look at the absolutely stonkingly wonderful hobby the folks in the PaintSlam discord have been up to over the month of September!

“Now Yellow is a notoriously hard color to paint, but I’ve found a scheme with which it’s quite easy to paint, and I’m using it for a Horde Army like night goblins, so trust me it’s not too hard. It’s an easy three step process (if basing step is ignored) that only require a bit of skill in layering.”
“First step is rather easy, just give it all a nice and even base coat of Balor Brown, it works over light and dark basecoats, so choose the one that fits best for the rest of the mini.”
“Second step is by far the trickiest, you gotta layer with Averland sunset, make sure to leave out the recesses so it’ll look sort of like shade, if you wanna do it extra good, try to blend from Balor Brown to Averland sunset.”
“Last step is a simply edge highlight over the raised folds and edges of the robes with Phalanx yellow, make sure to keep the highlight thin and dilute the paint properly with a bit of water or medium. And with that you have it done, an easy yellow robe.”
Thanks for the guest article, Momma Negan! I’d love to feature more guest articles in future so do get in touch if you’d like to share a technique or show your army project off!

And there we go, once again another stunning month of hobby from the PaintSlam community. Amazing work everyone! Keep it up, and keep filling those logbooks in!
And so we arrive at the start of May, and Golden Oldies month officially draws to a close. This April challenge was to paint something that fit the theme of a “Golden Oldie” – this could be a really old miniature, something thats been in your backlog for many years, a model of an old character, however you wanted to interpret it! Let’s take a look at what you wonderful hobbyists got up to for this project!
Cee, aka the Dork Phoenix, painted up this Krell model. The bright red harks back to a nostalgic era for many of us!
From Kemp, comes his first ever “proper” paint job as he calls it, a classic beakie Blood Angels space marine. Lovely work!
From Heavy Metal Wars comes a Rogue Trader Astropath and a Talisman 2nd edition Astropath standing in an old ruined chapel, a scenery piece that was a card insert from White Dwarf 212! Not only that, but check out that lovely unit of classic Grey Knights! And certainly not least, a classic beakie space marine from the Rogue Trader era in custom chapter colours of the Star Breakers!
From PSippit we have this classic Adeptus Titanicus titan, which afaik dates back to the late 80s! The modern paint job really hides its age well, it could stand proudly amongst a modern AT collection!
ThePoshGoblin is a hobbyist after my own heart with this, the original classic Orion model from back in the day! Got to love a bit of the retro Wood Elves!
It’s heresy time now, with this old school Chaos Sorcerer from BigGeordieGeek! Again I love the bright reds and greens here that really bring out that classic 90s vibe.
theelusiveshaun shared this Ork warbike, complete with evil sun iconography on the banner pole and front of the bike! Really lovely work!
Something from myself now, a unit of metal 90s Wood Elf archers with full command. I’ve always adored these archers and will probably aim to add more at some point to my growing Wood Elf army! I also added Ariel and a unit of classic metal Dryads.
You’ve seen one Krell, now it’s time for an even older Krell courtesy of Mommy Negan. Green base, red armour, banner pole, what’s not to adore? Mommy also shared a few other characters – a Wood Elf, an Empire halberdier and a Dwarf!
From Usagi/SHeroQueer comes this 1995 Hive Tyrant. Looks fabulous to me, would slip right into a modern army seamlessly! That’s not all though, she also shared this lovely HeroQuest warrior model!
Thokamous shared this Sgt. Rock for us, and although it did make it into last month’s community showcase he’s from an old comic and thus qualifies to get another showing! 🙂
From Art comes a trio of retro wonderfulness! The 1990 Maurauder Giant, a metal Imperial War Wagon and Malus Darkblade upon Cold One! A really varied and nostalgic mix of miniatures!
Aaaaand that brings us to the end of the Golden Oldies month. I think you’ll agree that we’ve seen a great selection of classic models here! If you’d like to join us in the #PaintSlam21 community and enter future events, please checkout the PaintSlam21 page for all the info!
So back in Ye Olde Nineties, when I was a mere lass with crippling gender dysphoria and less confidence than a small zebra who has to give a speech in front of ten hungry lions, I fell in love with this Wardancer for Warhammer Quest. I was already totally in love with the Wood Elves of the era. Orion, the Waywatchers, Scouts etc. All lovely miniatures. But it was the Wardancers I liked most, and this character model in particular jumped out to me. It sparked joy.
So it was that over 20 years later I decided to jump onto eBay and pick it up again (sadly unboxed and without any of the other goodies, but such is life). And I knew I wanted to paint it again, in that ’90s style complete with bright green base and wild primary colours.
And here he is, after a bunch of nostalgic painting! I like to think I got fairly close to the original vision for the model. I tried to get the yin-yang symbols looking good and I wanted to keep the colours vibrant.
It was such a blast painting this model again after something like 24 years since I first owned it. I think the level of detail and the pose is just perfect and it’s aged really well. The hair is one of those features you just can’t forget, it’s so iconic and I’d love to see these kind of wacky hairstyles return to the worlds of Warhammer.
Do you guys have any favourite Warhammer Quest miniatures? Anything you’d love to see me paint? And don’t forget I do commission painting so please get in touch if you have anything you’d like a splash of life on!
It’s been a little while since I shared some of my recent work to the blog here, so here’s a little bit of an update on what’s been keeping me busy through the latter half of November and this first half of December!
Krooty Boi
He’s Back
This fortress ain’t big enough for the two of us.
First up is this Kroot hero from the awesome Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress game. This is an ongoing job where I’m painting the models from the set alongside my other commissions. I had a lot of fun painting this guy – I’ve always loved the Kroot anyway and this model is super characterful!
Not a Heretic
Still Not a Heretic
This is a miniature I’ve had my eye on for a while for my beloved Dark Angels. It’s the finecast version of the banner bearer that dates back to the mid to late 90s I think, possibly. However old it is, the sculpt really holds up nicely with an absolutely gorgeous banner that was a joy to paint. I placed him upon a piece of tall slate to help him stand out, especially considering he’s competing for attention against his Primaris bretheren now!! I had fun painting the chainsword – they definitely work better if you give them hazard stripes! 😀
Mangler Squigs are cute
Loonboss sez: GIT OUTTA MY WAY!
Not a single braincell between them.
Next up, I painted this little lot here for the Gloomspite Gitz, two Mangler Squigs (one as a Loonboss), a Dankhold Troggoth and no less than six Rockgut Troggoths! I’ve painted the Troggoths before but this is my first time with the new plastic Mangler Squig kit (my previous one being the Finecast one from about 7/8 years ago!) and it was great fun. The squigs these days seem a lot more tadpole shaped rather than space hopper though, I think I prefer the “Space Hopper with Teeth” designs.
